Tiffany Devereux first encountered Saints in 2006 when she sailed to St Helena with her husband during their circumnavigation. St Helena was one of more than 50 islands Tiffany sailed to, but she was impressed with the friendliness and culture of this particular small island community. She learned about pending airport construction plans and was fascinated with the potential changes that may occur to such an insular island community.
In 2009, Tiffany decided to document the lives of the islanders as part of her photojournalism thesis project for her master's degree at UNC-Chapel Hill's School of Journalism and Communication. The ethnographic documentary would serve as a record the Saints' culture and way of life before globalization forces took shape. She spent six weeks conducting interviews and photographing the Saints in 2009, but later that year, funding for the airport was "paused" by the British government.
In November 2011, the British government resumed construction plans for the airport and began breaking ground in 2012. Tiffany's thesis documentary was edited and produced in 2012. She defended her thesis in July 2012.
